Krasman Centre is a Consumer/Survivor Initiative (CSI) which means we are governed, led and operated by people with lived experience of mental health and/or addictions and/ or housing/ homelessness/ poverty challenges, and family members/caregivers. All of our programs and services are peer support-based. Although we don’t ask for disclosure of details in a cover letter that may make a person feel uncomfortable, it is important to identify direct lived experience matching the specific role requirements.
The pillar of peer support is having common, lived/ living experiences, which nurtures a unique kind of understanding and connection. Peer support is a relationship where individuals with shared experiences, such as a mental health and/ or substance use challenges provide mutual support to one another. The nature of Peer Support is voluntary, and a trained peer supporter will walk alongside an individual through various stages of a person unique recovery journey. Lived experience under this umbrella term is when the applicant has similar lived/ living experience as the specific posting identifies.
Family peer support is also a key type of peer support that exists throughout the healthcare system. In family peer support, people connect based on the shared experience of caring about someone who is experiencing a mental health or substance use health challenge. Although it is often coined Family Peer Support, it does encompass the personal experience of supporting any loved one in their own journey; family or friends.
